Portraits d’habitants

Brommat, village du Nord-Aveyron d’environ 600 habitants aux confins du Cantal. C’est là qu’en août 2022 j’ai posé mon van pour une ou deux nuits, au camping municipal. Je ne savais pas que j’y resterai près de quinze jours et que  j’y reviendrais régulièrement allant jusqu’à m’y installer pour deux mois, en mars et avril 2023, pour réaliser une série de portraits d’habitants.

C’est grâce à Jean-Pierre Pagès, première personne que j’ai croisée par hasard dès mon arrivée au camping que j’ai pu rencontré le maire Didier Cayla pour lui soumettre cette idée : réaliser des portraits d’habitants et les exposer en très grands formats sur les murs du village. Quelques jours plus tôt, lors d’une conversation totalement informelle avec Jean-Pierre, je la lui avais suggérée. Il me répondit aussitôt, « demain je te prends rendez-vous avec le maire.»

37 portraits ont été réalisés et 31 photos sur bâches exposées du 15 juin au 15 septembre 2023 avec un petit catalogue d’exposition en complément.

A tous les habitants qui ont bien voulu poser devant mon objectif, je leur exprime à nouveau tous mes remerciements.

Portraits of residents

Brommat, a village in the Nord-Aveyron region of France with a population of around 600, on the edge of the Cantal region. It was here, in August 2022, that I set down my van for a couple of nights at the local campsite. Little did I know that I’d be staying there for almost a fortnight, and that I’d be coming back regularly even going so far as to settle there for two months in March and April 2023, to produce a series of portraits of the inhabitants.

It was thanks to Jean-Pierre Pagès, the first person I met by chance when I arrived at the campsite, that I was able to meet Mayor Didier Cayla and submit this idea to him: to create portraits of the inhabitants and exhibit them in very large format on the village walls. A few days earlier, during a completely informal conversation with Jean-Pierre, I had suggested it to him. He immediately replied, « Tomorrow I’ll make an appointment for you with the mayor. »

37 portraits were made and 31 photos on tarpaulins exhibited from June 15 to September 15, 2023, along with a small exhibition catalog.
